Do You Need a Handgun to Take a Colorado CCW Class and Get a Permit?

If you’re thinking about taking a Colorado Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) class, you might be wondering if you need to own a handgun to participate or apply for a permit. The short answer is: no—you don’t need to have your own handgun to get a permit. Let’s break down why and how you can still complete your training with ease.

Colorado CCW Class: Not Tied to Handgun Ownership

The Colorado CCW class is designed to teach you the essentials of carrying a concealed weapon safely and responsibly. The class covers a variety of topics including legal considerations, safe handling, and basic marksmanship. While you’ll need to demonstrate firearm proficiency during the live-fire portion of the class, owning a handgun is not a requirement.

Handgun Rentals Available

At many training facilities, including ours, handgun rentals are offered for students who don’t have their own firearm. This makes it easy for anyone to enroll in the class, whether you’re a first-time gun owner or still deciding on the right handgun for you. We offer a selection of handguns for rent during the shooting portion of the course, so you don’t need to worry about the cost or logistics of bringing your own firearm to class.

Please note: You will need to pay the rental gun fee, ammunition costs, and the range fee for the live-fire portion of the course. These additional costs are separate from the class fee, but they ensure you have everything you need for a successful training experience.

The CCW Permit Process

The CCW permit is not specifically tied to your handgun ownership—it’s about completing the required training, passing the written and shooting portions, and submitting your application to the state. Whether you have a handgun or are still deciding on one, the class will prepare you for safely carrying and using a firearm in public.

Important Clarification About the New Law

Under the new law going into effect July 1st, you do not need to own a handgun to apply for your CCW permit. While handgun ownership is required for the live-fire portion of the course, renting a firearm is a perfect option for those who do not yet have a handgun or who simply prefer to try different models before making a decision. This new law, found in C.R.S. 18-12-203, requires completing the necessary training and qualification for the CCW permit but is not tied specifically to handgun ownership.

Benefits of Renting a Handgun

Renting a handgun for the class offers several advantages:

  • Access to a firearm without the upfront cost: You can focus on learning without worrying about buying a gun before the class.
  • Try different models: Renting allows you to try different types of firearms, so you can decide what feels right for you.
  • No need for transport: You won’t need to worry about bringing your own firearm to class or dealing with the logistics of transporting it.

What is a Colorado CHP-Verified Instructor?

A Colorado CHP-verified instructor is an individual approved by the county sheriff’s office in the area where you are primarily based. These instructors are certified to provide the required concealed carry training that meets the legal standards established by Colorado law. The instructor must be authorized by the sheriff’s office of the county where they operate, ensuring they are qualified to teach courses that fulfill the requirements for obtaining a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). For more information about our Colorado Concealed Carry Class, visit here.

Why is it Now Required to Take a CCW Course Through a Verified Instructor?

Under Colorado State Statute SB23-016, effective July 1, 2025, all individuals applying for a concealed handgun permit (CHP) must complete a CCW training course through a sheriff-approved, CHP-verified instructor. This requirement ensures that applicants receive the correct, consistent, and legally compliant training. The course includes critical topics such as:

  • Understanding the legalities of concealed carry in Colorado
  • Safe firearm handling and storage
  • Defensive shooting techniques
  • Use of force and self-defense laws

Additionally, the course includes two essential components that applicants must successfully complete:

  1. Written Test: All students must pass a written exam, typically multiple-choice, covering important laws and firearm safety procedures. This test ensures that applicants have a clear understanding of the legal and safety aspects of concealed carry.
  2. Live Fire Qualification: The course includes live-fire training, where applicants must shoot 50 rounds. During this portion of the class, students must complete a shooting qualification, where they are required to achieve at least 70% accuracy on the target. This ensures that applicants are competent and comfortable with their firearm before carrying it concealed.

By taking the course with a verified instructor, you are guaranteed to meet the state’s specific training standards, which is essential for submitting a successful application for your CHP.

Minimum Class Duration Requirements

As part of the new law, the following class durations are now required:

  • New Classes: Must be a minimum of 8 hours in length. This ensures that you receive comprehensive training on all aspects of concealed carry, including legal knowledge, safety practices, and live-fire exercises.
  • Refresher Classes: For those renewing their permits, refresher courses must be at least 2 hours long. These classes ensure that even experienced gun owners stay updated on legal changes, safety protocols, and best practices.

How to Verify That an Instructor is CHP-Verified

To verify that an instructor is CHP-verified, you can:

  1. Contact the Sheriff’s Office: Since CHP-verified instructors are authorized by the county sheriff’s office, you can call or check the sheriff’s website to confirm if an instructor is certified in your county.
  2. Ask the Instructor Directly: A verified instructor should be able to provide proof of their certification. This proof will typically be in the form of a letter or certificate issued by the sheriff or police department, confirming their verified status. Additionally, the instructor should have a unique instructor number, which serves as an official identifier of their certification.
  3. Check for Instructor Listing: Some counties or sheriff’s offices may post lists of approved instructors on their official websites.

Here are some major counties and cities in Colorado and their official websites where you can find CHP-verified instructors:

Colorado Concealed Carry Class – Verified CCW Instructor

As a Colorado resident, obtaining a concealed carry permit (CCW) is not only a way to protect yourself and your loved ones but also a significant responsibility. If you’re ready to take that step, it’s crucial to ensure you’re receiving proper instruction from a verified and authorized instructor.

Mark Schneider (DPD Verified CHP Instructor)

I’m Mark Schneider, a firearms instructor authorized by the Denver Police Department to teach all Colorado residents the concealed handgun training required to obtain a Colorado concealed carry permit. As of October 3, 2024, I have been officially verified as a firearms instructor under Colorado Revised Statutes 18-12-207.7. This verification means I have met or exceeded all state requirements for certification and am legally qualified to teach CCW classes throughout the state.

What Does it Mean to Be a Verified CCW Instructor?

To ensure high standards of training, Colorado law requires that all concealed carry instructors be verified by the sheriff of the county where they primarily conduct training. This verification is governed by 18-12-202.7, which lays out the strict criteria that instructors must meet. As a verified instructor, I have gone through a thorough process that includes holding a valid concealed handgun permit, being certified by a recognized firearms training organization, and demonstrating my ability to instruct.

Verification is not a one-time process—it is valid for 10 years, meaning my status as a verified instructor is current through October 2034, and I must maintain my qualifications throughout this period. The Denver Police Department has confirmed my ability to instruct Colorado residents in both initial CCW courses and refresher courses for permit renewal.

What You Can Expect from My CCW Classes

When you choose to train with me, you’re getting more than just the required certificate—you’re receiving high-quality, personalized instruction that covers all aspects of firearm safety and legal responsibilities. My classes are designed to ensure that you leave feeling confident, knowledgeable, and well-prepared to carry a concealed handgun responsibly. Here’s a breakdown of what my courses include:

1. In-Person, Hands-On Instruction

Colorado law mandates that concealed handgun training be conducted in person with the instructor present at the same location as the students—no part of the class can be taught online. My classes are interactive, with live-fire exercises that ensure you’re comfortable and competent handling a firearm. You’ll be learning in a safe and supportive environment, with real-time feedback to help you improve your skills.

2. Comprehensive Curriculum

My CCW course covers a wide range of topics to ensure you understand both the practical and legal aspects of carrying a concealed firearm. You’ll receive detailed instruction on:

  • Firearms safety fundamentals: Proper handling, storage, and care for your firearm.
  • Shooting fundamentals: Grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, and more.
  • Colorado and federal firearm laws: You’ll learn the intricacies of state laws, including those governing the use of deadly force for self-defense, and the latest updates, such as the Extreme Risk Protection Orders and the Isabella Joy Thallas Act on reporting lost or stolen firearms.
  • Conflict management and de-escalation: Techniques to avoid or mitigate dangerous situations and the judgmental use of lethal force.
  • Interaction with law enforcement: Best practices for safely interacting with law enforcement while carrying a concealed weapon.

3. Live-Fire Shooting Exercise

One of the most important components of concealed carry training is the live-fire shooting exercise. Colorado law requires that students discharge at least 50 rounds of ammunition and achieve at least 70% accuracy to pass. In my class, you’ll receive personalized coaching during this exercise, helping you improve your shooting skills while ensuring that you meet the state’s accuracy requirements.

4. Written Competency Exam

In addition to the live-fire portion, Colorado law mandates that all students pass a written concealed handgun competency exam, testing your knowledge of firearms safety, laws, and use of force principles. You’ll need to score at least 80% on this exam to pass, and it will be administered as an open-book test, allowing you to refer back to course materials.

5. Refresher Classes

If you already have a concealed carry permit and need to renew it, I also offer refresher courses that meet all state requirements. Refresher courses are required to include at least two hours of instruction, including a live-fire exercise and a written exam. These courses ensure you stay up-to-date with any changes in firearm laws and maintain your skills.

Why Choose Me as Your CCW Instructor?

With over a decade of experience as a firearms instructor and security professional, I have trained hundreds of individuals, including security guards, law enforcement officers, and responsible gun owners. My training methods are designed to exceed state standards while providing students with practical skills that go beyond the basics. Here’s why you should choose me for your CCW training:

  • Authorized by the Denver Police Department: I am a verified and authorized instructor, giving you the assurance that your training meets all legal requirements.
  • Proven Experience: I have over 10 years of experience as an armed security guard and have trained hundreds of individuals in firearm safety, defensive shooting, and concealed carry.
