Colorado Concealed Carry & Firearms Training FAQs

Colorado Training FAQs

Have questions about our Colorado concealed carry classes or firearms training? Our FAQ page covers registration, course requirements, what to bring, live-fire qualifications, CHP permits, renewal classes, and Colorado’s Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card. Find the answers you need before registering for your class.

1. Who is eligible to take a Colorado concealed carry class, and do I need to own a firearm?

Anyone who is at least 21 years old and is legally allowed to possess a firearm may take our Colorado concealed carry class. You do not need to own a firearm before attending. Many students take the class before purchasing their first handgun so they can better understand firearm safety, Colorado concealed carry laws, and how to choose the right firearm. If you don’t own a handgun, contact us before class to discuss available options. Our instructors work with both first-time firearm owners and experienced shooters, making the course welcoming for students of all experience levels.

2. What topics are covered during the Colorado concealed carry class?

Our concealed carry class covers much more than simply learning how to shoot. Students receive instruction on firearm safety, safe storage, handgun fundamentals, marksmanship, Colorado self-defense laws, the lawful use of force, conflict avoidance, situational awareness, concealed carry responsibilities, and interactions with law enforcement. The course also includes a written examination and the required live-fire qualification. Our goal is to prepare students to carry a firearm safely, responsibly, and confidently while meeting Colorado’s training requirements for obtaining a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP).

3. How long is the concealed carry class, and what can I expect throughout the day?

Our new applicant concealed carry class lasts approximately 8 to 9 hours, depending on class size and range conditions. The day begins with classroom instruction covering firearm safety, Colorado law, and concealed carry responsibilities. Students then complete the written examination before moving to the range for the required live-fire qualification. Throughout the day, our verified instructors encourage questions and provide hands-on guidance. We recommend bringing lunch, drinks, and everything you’ll need for a comfortable day of training.

4. What should I bring with me to my concealed carry class?

Students should bring a valid government-issued photo ID, an unloaded handgun secured in a case, magazines, 50 to 100 rounds of ammunition, eye and ear protection, lunch or snacks, drinks, and note-taking materials. Dress comfortably for both classroom instruction and range training, including closed-toe shoes. If you do not own a handgun or have questions about equipment, contact us before class so we can discuss available options. Arriving prepared helps ensure the class runs smoothly and allows you to focus on learning.

5. Do I need previous shooting experience before taking the class?

No. Our Colorado concealed carry class is designed for both beginners and experienced firearm owners. If you’ve never handled a handgun before, our instructors will teach the fundamentals of safe firearm handling, loading and unloading, grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and safe range procedures before the live-fire qualification. More experienced shooters also benefit from reviewing Colorado laws, concealed carry responsibilities, and current training standards. Every student receives professional instruction regardless of their experience level.

6. Is live-fire training required, and what does the qualification involve?

Yes. Colorado law requires new concealed carry applicants to complete a live-fire exercise as part of their training. During our class, students safely demonstrate basic firearm handling and marksmanship under the direct supervision of our verified instructors. Before going to the range, we’ll review safety procedures and answer any questions to help students feel comfortable and confident. The live-fire qualification is designed to reinforce safe firearm handling rather than challenge advanced shooting skills.

7. Is there a written examination, and what happens if I don’t pass?

Yes. Students complete a written examination covering the material presented during the course, including firearm safety, Colorado concealed carry laws, and responsible firearm ownership. The exam helps confirm that students understand the important legal and safety concepts discussed throughout the day. If you do not achieve a passing score on your first attempt, our instructors will review the material with you and explain any missed questions. Our goal is to help every student understand the information—not simply administer a test.

8. What happens after I successfully complete the concealed carry class?

After successfully completing the classroom instruction, written examination, and live-fire qualification, you’ll receive your Colorado concealed carry training certificate. This certificate is required when applying for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit through your local sheriff’s office. After receiving your certificate, you’ll complete the permit application process, submit fingerprints and any required fees, and undergo the background check conducted by the sheriff’s office. Our instructors are happy to answer questions about the application process after class.

9. How long is my Colorado concealed carry training certificate valid?

Your concealed carry training certificate is generally valid for one year, giving you plenty of time to submit your Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit application. Because laws and administrative procedures can change, we recommend applying as soon as possible after completing your training. Waiting too long could require you to retake the course if your certificate expires before you apply. If you have questions about the application timeline, our instructors are happy to help.

10. Will this class satisfy Colorado’s training requirements for obtaining a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP)?

Yes. Our new applicant concealed carry class is taught by verified Colorado CHP instructors and meets Colorado’s training requirements for obtaining a Concealed Handgun Permit. The course includes classroom instruction, the required written examination, and the live-fire exercise required by Colorado law. While successfully completing the class satisfies the state’s training requirement, the final decision to issue a permit is made by your local sheriff’s office after reviewing your application and conducting the required background check.

11. Can I take the concealed carry class if I have never handled a handgun before?

Absolutely. Many of our students are first-time firearm owners or have very little shooting experience. Our instructors create a welcoming learning environment where beginners can ask questions and build confidence without feeling intimidated. We begin with firearm safety and basic handling skills before moving into more advanced topics and the live-fire qualification. Whether you’re purchasing your first handgun or simply want professional instruction, our course is designed to help you succeed.

12. What is the difference between the new applicant concealed carry class and the renewal class?

The new applicant class is intended for individuals applying for their first Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit and includes comprehensive classroom instruction, a written examination, and the required live-fire qualification. The renewal class is designed for current permit holders who need to renew their permit before it expires. Renewal training is shorter because it focuses on reviewing Colorado law, firearm safety, and maintaining proficiency while still meeting the state’s renewal requirements. Be sure to register for the course that matches your permit status.

13. Can I use this class to apply for a concealed carry permit in any Colorado county?

Yes. Because our instructors are verified under Colorado law, students who successfully complete our class may use their training certificate when applying for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit through any county sheriff’s office in the state. Although the training requirements are statewide, each sheriff’s office manages its own application appointments, fingerprinting procedures, and processing times. We recommend checking with your local sheriff for the most current application instructions.

14. How do I register for a concealed carry class, and what happens after I sign up?

Registering is simple. Enter your name and email address using the registration form on our website. You’ll then be directed to our training calendar, where you can choose the class date and location that works best for your schedule. After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation email with important information, including what to bring, classroom directions, and any additional instructions to help you prepare for your training day.

1. How do I apply for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP)?

After successfully completing a state-compliant concealed carry class, you’ll apply for your Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit through the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department in the county where you reside, as authorized under current Colorado law. The application process typically includes submitting your completed application, your concealed carry training certificate, a valid government-issued photo ID, fingerprints, and the required government fee. Once your application has been submitted, the issuing agency will conduct a background check before making a decision on your permit. Application procedures, appointment availability, and processing times may vary slightly, so we recommend checking with your local issuing agency before applying.

2. What are the requirements to obtain a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit?

To qualify for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit, you must be at least 21 years old, legally eligible to possess a firearm under both state and federal law, complete a concealed carry course taught by a Verified Colorado CHP Instructor, and apply through the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department in the county where you reside. You’ll also be required to submit fingerprints, complete a criminal background check, and pay the applicable government fee. While successfully completing the training course satisfies Colorado’s training requirement, the final decision to issue your permit is made by the issuing agency after reviewing your application.

3. How long does it take to receive my Colorado CHP after applying?

Processing times vary depending on the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department handling your application. Under Colorado law, the issuing agency generally has up to 90 days after receiving a completed application to approve or deny your permit. Some applicants receive their permit much sooner, while others may wait closer to the full processing period depending on application volume and background check processing times. Once approved, your permit is typically mailed directly to the address you provided on your application.

4. How much does it cost to obtain a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit?

The total cost of obtaining a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit includes both your concealed carry training course and the government application fee. The government fee for a new permit is $152.50, while a renewal permit is $52.50. Some counties or municipalities may charge slightly less depending on local policies, so it’s always a good idea to verify the current fee with your local Sheriff’s Office or Police Department before submitting your application. The cost of your concealed carry class is separate and is listed on our website.

5. How long is a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit valid?

A Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit is valid for five years from the date it is issued. You may begin the renewal process up to 120 days before your permit expires by submitting a renewal application through the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department that issued your permit. Colorado also provides a six-month grace period after expiration during which eligible permit holders may still renew without applying as a first-time applicant. Renewing before your permit expires is the best way to avoid interruptions in your ability to legally carry a concealed handgun.

6. What happens if my Colorado CHP expires?

If your permit expires, Colorado law allows most eligible permit holders to renew within six months after the expiration date. During that time, however, your expired permit does not authorize you to carry a concealed handgun. If you wait beyond the six-month grace period, you’ll generally need to apply as a new applicant, complete a new concealed carry training course, and submit a new application through the appropriate Sheriff’s Office or Police Department. Renewing your permit before it expires is the easiest way to avoid delays and additional training requirements.

7. Can I carry a concealed handgun immediately after completing the class?

No. Successfully completing a concealed carry class only satisfies Colorado’s training requirement. You must still submit your application to your local Sheriff’s Office or Police Department, successfully complete the required background check, and receive your Concealed Handgun Permit before you may legally carry a concealed handgun. Until your permit has been issued, you must continue following all applicable Colorado and federal firearm laws regarding possession and transportation of firearms.

8. Where do I apply for a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit?

You must apply through the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department in the county where you reside, as authorized under current Colorado law. The issuing agency will collect your application, verify your training certificate, complete your fingerprinting, collect the required fees, and conduct the background investigation before issuing your permit. Before scheduling your appointment, we recommend visiting your local agency’s website to review its application requirements, office hours, and any documents you’ll need to bring.

9. What should I do if I move after receiving my Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit?

If you move after receiving your Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit, Colorado law requires you to notify the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department that issued your permit within 14 calendar days of your address change. Keeping your address current ensures your permit records remain accurate and allows the issuing agency to contact you if necessary. If you’re unsure how to update your information, simply contact the agency that issued your permit for instructions. Failing to update your address within the required time frame could result in unnecessary complications with your permit.

10. Does a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit allow me to carry everywhere?

No. While a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit allows you to carry a concealed handgun in many public places, there are still locations where firearms are prohibited by state or federal law. Examples include certain government buildings, secure areas of airports, federal facilities, and private property where firearms are prohibited by the owner. Responsible permit holders should always understand where carrying is lawful and comply with all posted restrictions. Our Colorado concealed carry classes cover many of these topics to help students better understand their legal responsibilities before carrying a concealed firearm.

11. Why should I obtain a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit?

Obtaining a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit allows qualified individuals to legally carry a concealed handgun for personal protection while complying with Colorado law. Beyond the legal authority to carry, the training required for the permit helps students develop a strong understanding of

The course is designed to educate firearm purchasers on safe firearm handling, secure storage, Colorado firearm laws, and responsible firearm ownership. Upon successfully completing the course and passing the required written examination, students receive a course completion certificate that can be used when applying for a Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card through their local Sheriff’s Office or Police Department.

2. Who is exempt from taking the Colorado Firearms Safety Course?

Colorado law provides several exemptions from the Firearms Safety Course requirement. Certain individuals, such as active and retired law enforcement officers, qualifying military personnel, and individuals who possess a valid Colorado Hunter Education Certificate, may qualify for a reduced course or an exemption depending on the circumstances. Because exemptions are established by Colorado law and may change over time, we recommend reviewing the current requirements or contacting us if you have questions about your eligibility.

3. How long is the Colorado Firearms Safety Course?

The standard Colorado Firearms Safety Course consists of approximately 12 hours of classroom instruction. Students who qualify by presenting a valid Colorado Hunter Education Certificate may be eligible to complete a shorter four-hour version of the course, as permitted by Colorado law. Our standard course is conveniently offered over three consecutive evenings, making it easier for working adults to complete the required training without attending an all-day class.

4. What topics are covered during the Firearms Safety Course?

The course covers firearm safety, safe storage practices, Colorado firearm laws, suicide prevention awareness, conflict de-escalation, lawful firearm ownership, secure transportation of firearms, and responsible decision-making. Students will also learn how to safely load, unload, inspect, and handle firearms while gaining a better understanding of their legal responsibilities as firearm owners. The curriculum follows Colorado’s requirements for the Firearms Safety Course.

5. Is there live-fire training required for the Firearms Safety Course?

No. Unlike Colorado’s concealed carry course, the Firearms Safety Course does not require a live-fire exercise or shooting qualification. The course is entirely classroom based and focuses on firearm safety, legal responsibilities, and safe handling practices. Students are not required to bring a firearm, ammunition, or any shooting equipment to class.

6. Is there a written examination?

Yes. Students must successfully complete a written examination at the end of the course. The exam measures your understanding of the safety concepts, legal responsibilities, and material presented during the training. Our instructors thoroughly review the curriculum throughout the class to help every student understand the information before taking the examination.

7. What happens after I successfully complete the course?

After successfully completing the Firearms Safety Course and passing the written examination, you’ll receive your course completion certificate. You may then apply for your Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card through the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department in the county where you reside, as authorized under Colorado law. The issuing agency will review your application, complete the required background check, and determine your eligibility before issuing your card.

8. How long is my Firearms Safety Course certificate valid?

Your course completion certificate remains valid for one year from the date of successful completion. We recommend applying for your Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card as soon as possible after completing the class to avoid any delays or the need to retake the course if your certificate expires.

9. How much does the Firearms Safety Course and Eligibility Card cost?

The cost of the Firearms Safety Course is listed on our website and is separate from any government application fees. After completing the course, you’ll also pay the applicable fee charged by the Sheriff’s Office or Police Department when applying for your Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card. Government fees are established by Colorado law and may vary slightly depending on the issuing agency, so we recommend confirming the current fee before submitting your application.
