Actor Firearms Coaching & Safety Training for Film and TV Productions

When it comes to using firearms on set, safety isn’t optional — it’s non-negotiable. At Concealed Carry Classes of Denver (CCCD), we require every actor, crew member, and production team personnel who handles or works near firearms to complete firearms safety training before a single blank is chambered or a scene is blocked.

You wouldn’t let someone drive a car in a high-speed chase scene without driver’s ed. It’s the same with firearms. A lack of training can result in tragedy, legal exposure, or ruined productions. Handling guns for film is serious — and it must be treated professionally.

🎓 Required Firearms Training — Based on What’s Used On Set

No one — including actors, stunt doubles, extras, or prop handlers — will handle firearms (real, blank-firing, or replica) until they complete the appropriate training.

We tailor the curriculum to match what’s actually used in your production. Whether your script includes handguns, rifles, or shotguns, we provide focused, safety-first training for each platform.

🔫 Firearms Safety Curriculum Includes:

  • Firearm safety fundamentals (based on NRA & USCCA standards)
  • Pistol, rifle, and shotgun platform handling
  • Safe loading, unloading, chamber checks, and manipulation
  • Muzzle discipline and trigger control
  • Scene choreography with firearm integration
  • Blank-firing procedures and prop weapon differences
  • On-set safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Live-fire familiarization (optional based on production needs)

We blend NRA and USCCA methodology to train actors and crew for realism and reliability while always prioritizing safety.

🎯 Why Every Actor and Crew Member Must Train

  • Realism Without Risk: Actors who are trained handle firearms more convincingly — and safely.
  • Legal Protection for Productions: Proper training helps reduce liability and shows documented due diligence.
  • Muscle Memory for High-Stress Scenes: Our drills reinforce good habits that stick even under pressure.
  • Compliance With Union Standards: Our protocols meet and exceed SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, and OSHA expectations.

🎥 Supervised On-Set Firearms Management

After completing training, every participant receives a certificate of completion and written proof of training. Our certified firearms instructors and licensed weapons masters remain available to:

  • Conduct safety briefings
  • Walk through scenes in advance
  • Supervise live-fire or blank-fire scenes
  • Inspect and secure firearms and props

The Fallout of the Rust Shooting: What Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s Release Means for the Firearms Industry and Film Armorers

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Mug Shot

The release of armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed from jail on May 23, 2025, has reopened a conversation the film industry still hasn’t fully addressed: firearm safety on set—and the life-or-death consequences when it’s ignored. While the public spotlight has dimmed, professionals in the firearms training and entertainment industry know that the impact of the Rust shooting will be felt for years to come.

This tragedy wasn’t just about a gun—it was about negligence at every level. And for weapons masters and armorers, it has become a defining moment.

🎯 The Industry Is on Notice

The incident exposed systemic issues: underqualified personnel, lack of clear protocols, and a rushed production culture. According to a 2023 IATSE survey, nearly 40% of film crew members reported unsafe handling of firearms on set. This isn’t rare—it’s alarmingly common.

The message is clear: cutting corners on firearms safety is no longer acceptable.

🛡 Why Professional Armorers Matter

Hiring a real weapons master is more than a checkbox—it’s a responsibility. Here’s what a qualified armorer does:

  • Implements rigorous safety protocols before every scene.
  • Inspects all firearms and ensures no live rounds are present—ever.
  • Controls ammunition and verifies only blanks or dummy rounds are used.
  • Trains actors to handle firearms correctly and safely.
  • Runs rehearsals to identify risks before the cameras roll.

A professional like myself brings experience from the real world—not just film sets, but firearms instruction, defensive tactics, and law enforcement-style training. I’ve trained thousands of CCW holders, security guards, and civilians. That depth matters when your production is relying on realism and safety.

❓ Mini FAQ: Firearm Safety on Set

Q: Can real guns still be used in film and TV?
A: Yes—but only under the supervision of a trained armorer who understands safety and law.

Q: Isn’t the armorer solely responsible?
A: No. While the armorer manages physical safety, the actor is responsible for how they handle the firearm. Producers are liable for who they hire.

Q: Why not use rubber guns or CGI instead?
A: CGI and props work in some scenes—but not all. Action scenes, close-up work, and realistic recoil usually require real firearms. Audiences notice the difference.

📅 Rust Shooting: A Timeline of Negligence

  • October 21, 2021: Alec Baldwin fatally shoots cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set with a live round from a supposed prop gun.
  • January 31, 2023: Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed are both charged with involuntary manslaughter.
  • March 6, 2024: Gutierrez-Reed is convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
  • April 15, 2024: She is sentenced to 18 months in prison.
  • July 9, 2024: Baldwin’s trial begins.
  • July 12, 2024: Charges against Baldwin are dismissed with prejudice due to alleged prosecutorial misconduct.
  • May 23, 2025: Gutierrez-Reed is released from jail.

But legal dismissal is not the same as innocence.

🎭 Alec Baldwin Is Still Responsible

Alec Baldwin may have avoided a conviction, but the facts are unchanged:

  • He was holding the gun.
  • He pulled the trigger.
  • He failed to check if it was loaded.
  • He was a producer, responsible for hiring and safety oversight.

In any professional firearms course, we teach the foundational rule: Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded. Baldwin violated that rule. And Halyna Hutchins paid the price.

What Does the Colorado Written CCW Test Cover?

If you’re planning to get your Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP), you’ll need to take a state-compliant class that includes both a written exam and a live-fire shooting qualification. Whether you’re attending our 8-hour class for new applicants or our 4-hour renewal course, the written CCW test is a required step—and it’s designed to make sure you understand your responsibilities as a firearm carrier.

Let’s break down what you can expect on test day.

✅ Who Has to Take the Written CCW Test?

  • New Applicants (8-hour course): Must complete a full classroom curriculum, take a written test, and pass a live-fire qualification.
  • Renewals (4-hour course): Must take an abbreviated class and pass a written test. Some counties may waive the live-fire portion for renewals, but we include it regardless for safety and skill upkeep.

📝 What’s On the Colorado CCW Written Test?

We designed our test to meet and exceed the new requirements under Colorado Revised Statute § 18-12-202.5, effective July 1, 2025. The written exam is multiple choice and covers real-world knowledge every responsible carrier should know.

📊 What Score Do You Need to Pass?

  • Minimum Passing Score: 80%
  • You’ll have plenty of time to finish, and we go over everything in class.
  • If you fail, you can retake the test after reviewing the relevant material.

📅 When Do You Take the Test?

  • New Applicants: Toward the end of the classroom portion—after lunch but before heading to the range.
  • Renewals: After the classroom refresher. If you’ve stayed sharp, you’ll do fine.

💡 Is It Hard?

No. It’s not a trick test. But it is serious. We want every student—new or experienced—to walk out with confidence and legal clarity. If you’re paying to carry a concealed firearm legally, it’s worth knowing the law and your responsibilities.
